kortrijk-weide, kortrijk, belgium
The Kortrijk freight station fell into disuse years ago and the grounds of the old rail sidings became an open-air car park next to the ring road around the central part of the city. Halfway between the river and the passenger station, and between the historic centre and the facilities on the other side of the rail tracks, the Kortrijk-Weide grounds offered enormous potential to articulate a strategic territory west of the city centre.
The proposal maintains the sheds of the old warehouses and transforms them into offices for innovation and incubators for stat-ups. At one end, a concert hall is set up, while its south side is closed with an adult training school and the north side with an indoor pool. The set of buildings is articulated by a canopy that extends the one of the old sheds and embraces the new constructions.
In the centre, a public space for large events that can alternatively function as a car park. Between this and the river, a large public park for the enjoyment of citizens and the management of rain water. Two pedestrian connectors –one with the city centre and the other with the plots on the other side of the railway- and a vehicular access anchor the new complex to the surroundings.
